Finnish American industrial designer and architect Eero Saarinen was well known for his neo-futuristic style when it came to his furniture design, and created many pieces that still remain just as iconic today.
-
Gifted and visionary designers of the most iconic furniture sometimes add to the value of special pieces by only crafting only a limited number of that outstanding item. Which is what happened with this hugely inviting LC3 Grand Confort chair. This fine example of mid century modern furniture was felt to be so ‘singular’ in its features and construction, that producing large manufacturing runs would not do it justice.

The Bamberg Barcelona chair is an in-house Iconic Interiors project. The idea came to me when I saw a photograph (see below) of one of the very early Barcelona chairs from 1931 which sold at auction for £56000 with Christies in 1986. The chair looked very old but still beautiful. More beautiful I thought than a new chair — which I think can look too pristine. I often wonder how one of the first Barcelona chairs would have looked. I imagine it would have looked a lot more edgy and rugged.
-
This is a fitting name for a piece of seating that stands unashamedly tall and proud, using quality wood in place of the iconic bird’s tail feathers.
-
Stellar chairs go beyond simple seating and become a decorative piece of three-dimensional art. Particularly if contemporary versions use only the finest manufacturing processes and materials.

Legend has it that Marcel Breuer’s Wassily Chair was named for Wassily Kandinsky, the 20th Century artist known as the father of abstract painting. In this case, however, the legend is wrong.
-
Using a pleasing interplay of horizontal and vertical lines, and bold primary colours, the Red and Blue Chair by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld firmly demonstrates the fact that style does not have to mean compromising on comfort.
-
The De Stijl (or Neoplasticism) art and architecture movement earned its undying devotion from discerning buyers due to its ability to combine abstract and simplified forms with breathtaking originality.

I’m a huge fan of the LC2 Soft. As with the LC3 Speciale, the LC2 Soft has feather filled cushions. I love the way the cushions are seemingly bursting out of the chair cage.

Originally designed by Danish furniture designer Poul M. Volther in 1961, the Corona Chair was first launched in 1964. Prior to the Corona Chair, Volther developed other, similar designs that included the Pyramid Chair in 1953: a foam and cloth constructed design which saw no commercial success. It is the now iconic Corona Chair for which he has become best known. Its distinctive design, consisting of a series of elliptical cushions separated by open spaces, is said to have been designed not just for aesthetic purposes, but also in order to economise on materials after the Second World War.

The Pelican Chair was designed by Danish master Finn Juhl, and is a perfect example of how the designer took much of his inspiration from ‘free art’. It hangs from the ceiling, swaying back and forth like a swing. It’s round, like a ball. It’s big and thick enough to isolate you in your own little world of privacy and comfort. Yet it’s also transparent, allowing you full view of whatever might be going on in the world around you. It’s the Bubble chair – and it’s possibly the most fun a person can have sitting down.

It’s comfy, it’s curvy, it’s even downright friendly – just like the Michelin man it was named for. Sitting in Eileen Gray’s Bibendum Chair is kind of like getting a hug that doesn’t stop until you get up. The comfortable, cocoon‑y feeling is a direct result of the chair’s construction. Its back and arm rest are fashioned from two semi-circular padded tubes covered in the softest leather. But Gray’s signature seat isn’t just about feeling good, it’s about looking good.
-
20th century modernist design produced more famous chairs than you can count – chairs that are sleek, chairs that are comfortable, chairs that have stood the test of time to become design icons. But of all the chairs created over the past century, none makes quite as much of a statement as Eero Aarnio’s Ball Chair.
