Finnish Amer­i­can indus­tri­al design­er and archi­tect Eero Saari­nen was well known for his neo-futur­is­tic style when it came to his fur­ni­ture design, and cre­at­ed many pieces that still remain just as icon­ic today. 

Gift­ed and vision­ary design­ers of the most icon­ic fur­ni­ture some­times add to the val­ue of spe­cial pieces by only craft­ing only a lim­it­ed num­ber of that out­stand­ing item. Which is what hap­pened with this huge­ly invit­ing LC3 Grand Con­fort chair. This fine exam­ple of mid cen­tu­ry mod­ern fur­ni­ture was felt to be so ​‘sin­gu­lar’ in its fea­tures and con­struc­tion, that pro­duc­ing large man­u­fac­tur­ing runs would not do it justice. 

Designed in 1958 for the Radis­son SAS Hotel in Copen­hagen, the Swan chair is one of Jacob­sen’s most pop­u­lar designs.

The Bam­berg Barcelona chair is an in-house Icon­ic Inte­ri­ors project. The idea came to me when I saw a pho­to­graph (see below) of one of the very ear­ly Barcelona chairs from 1931 which sold at auc­tion for £56000 with Christies in 1986. The chair looked very old but still beau­ti­ful. More beau­ti­ful I thought than a new chair — which I think can look too pris­tine. I often won­der how one of the first Barcelona chairs would have looked. I imag­ine it would have looked a lot more edgy and rugged. 

This is a fit­ting name for a piece of seat­ing that stands unashamed­ly tall and proud, using qual­i­ty wood in place of the icon­ic bird’s tail feathers. 

Stel­lar chairs go beyond sim­ple seat­ing and become a dec­o­ra­tive piece of three-dimen­sion­al art. Par­tic­u­lar­ly if con­tem­po­rary ver­sions use only the finest man­u­fac­tur­ing process­es and materials.

Leg­end has it that Mar­cel Breuer’s Wass­i­ly Chair was named for Wass­i­ly Kandin­sky, the 20^th Cen­tu­ry artist known as the father of abstract paint­ing. In this case, how­ev­er, the leg­end is wrong. 

Using a pleas­ing inter­play of hor­i­zon­tal and ver­ti­cal lines, and bold pri­ma­ry colours, the Red and Blue Chair by Ger­rit Thomas Rietveld firm­ly demon­strates the fact that style does not have to mean com­pro­mis­ing on comfort.

The De Sti­jl (or Neo­plas­ti­cism) art and archi­tec­ture move­ment earned its undy­ing devo­tion from dis­cern­ing buy­ers due to its abil­i­ty to com­bine abstract and sim­pli­fied forms with breath­tak­ing originality.

The intri­cate and fas­ci­nat­ing form of the Hill House chair reflects its ori­gins in the high­ly for­ma­tive Art Nou­veau era of archi­tec­ture and design. It was cre­at­ed by the high­ly influ­en­tial Scot­tish archi­tect, design­er and artist Charles Ren­nie Mack­in­tosh in 1888.

Fun, fas­ci­nat­ing and inno­v­a­tive are just three of the descrip­tive words com­mon­ly asso­ci­at­ed with the Cir­cle Chair, lov­ing­ly man­u­fac­tured by the fam­i­ly-owned and glob­al­ly respect­ed PP Møbler join­ery workshop. 

I’m a huge fan of the LC2 Soft. As with the LC3 Spe­ciale, the LC2 Soft has feath­er filled cush­ions. I love the way the cush­ions are seem­ing­ly burst­ing out of the chair cage.

The LC1 Sling chair from Le Cor­busier. Made in Italy and avail­able in a num­ber of finishes. 

Orig­i­nal­ly designed by Dan­ish fur­ni­ture design­er Poul M. Volther in 1961, the Coro­na Chair was first launched in 1964. Pri­or to the Coro­na Chair, Volther devel­oped oth­er, sim­i­lar designs that includ­ed the Pyra­mid Chair in 1953: a foam and cloth con­struct­ed design which saw no com­mer­cial suc­cess. It is the now icon­ic Coro­na Chair for which he has become best known. Its dis­tinc­tive design, con­sist­ing of a series of ellip­ti­cal cush­ions sep­a­rat­ed by open spaces, is said to have been designed not just for aes­thet­ic pur­pos­es, but also in order to economise on mate­ri­als after the Sec­ond World War.
