Today I had an idea for a short video. This week I'd been asked the same question 3 or 4 times. The question being, "how long will the chair last?" It then occurred to me that my favourite chair for reading and watching the box is my Iconic Interiors 7 year old Eames Lounger covered in old chestnut leather.

I love this chair. Seriously. It has everything: stunning looks and extreme comfort. I thought, I know a great idea for a video. Why don't I compare my investment 2001 Vitra Eames lounge chair with my 7 year old (2011) Iconic Interior's lounge chair? Afterall, this is exactly what my customers want. Fortunately, I was able to journey back into the past, to soak up some of the inspiration behind concepts that now shape modern architecture and furniture. How was this possible?

In this article, I will take you with me (figuratively speaking) on my visit to the German Pavilion in Barcelona. I want to share with you the joy I had exploring the historic significance of Mies Van Der Rohe and the evolution of the Barcelona chair.

What are you currently sitting on? The chances are it’s a modern chair of some sort. There’s also a strong possibility that its design is based on one of seven important chair concepts.

Unless it's antique seating or a park bench, your chair will be based on modernist design. The same principles that shape much of contemporary architecture too.

Some design concepts are so mind-blowingly simple and insightful, that the big question you’re left with is ‘why did no one else think of that before?’

Of course, such genius is often the result of a long process of assimilating many ideas and creative stimulants. Even when the end result of this ‘invention’ seems strikingly obvious and utterly unambiguous in its benefits.
