As his reputation grew in Modernist circles, he was enlisted by the famed Herman Miller to illustrate an article, written by George Nelson, titled “How to Make a Table”. The design Noguchi used to illustrate the piece, brought to life in wood and glass, became his famous “coffee table” – illustrating its creator’s firm belief that “everything is sculpture”. The table’s graceful blending of wood and glass in a truly organic form makes it as a much a piece of modern art as it is a piece of furniture.
The table itself is the very nature of simplicity. Two smoothly shaped pieces of wood interlock to form a tripod that supports a thick slab of transparent glass. The resulting table is as beautiful as it is practical, sturdy enough to support cocktails, magazines or objects d’art in either a professional or home environment. Like most Modernist pieces, it has been designed to last, and is equally at home with other furniture of its era as it is with the newest modern pieces.
Noguchi first trained as a sculptor under the man who designed American landmark Mt. Rushmore – who dismissed him because he thought his young pupil had no talent. Clearly this was for the best, as it’s doubtful a piece of furniture based on a bust of George Washington would have endured through the decades. Instead, Noguchi created many modern masterpieces, including a coffee table that has brought a taste of fine art to countless homes and businesses.
