Mies van der Rohe designed the Pavilion Table’s simple, stylish metal base, fitted with a solitary square of toughened glass, to be a statement of modern design – and it is. The Pavilion Table is a perfect representation of its designer’s famous maxim: ‘less is more’.

The Pavilion side table, also know as the Barcelona side table, is a perfect example of classic Bauhaus design, using heavy duty materials to create a simple, modern form. It is minimalism at its truest: pure, simple and clean. The design is still as brilliant and breathtaking as the year it was first created, around eighty years ago.
The exact creation date of the Pavilion side table remains a mystery, but many believe it was designed as part of the German Pavilion (as its name would indicate), which was showcased at the 1929 Barcelona Exposition. At the Exposition, Mies van der Rohe, who was German by birth, launched his Barcelona Chairs, which he designed for the King of Spain to use during his visit to the show. Some, however, believe the side table was created in 1927 for the Tugendhat House in Brno, Czechoslovakia. The debate continues, but more importantly the iconic appeal of the chair lives on.
Mies van der Rohe, the Pavilion side table’s famous designer, also created the world’s most famous living-room set and is widely believed to be a founding father of Modernism. He was both an architect and a designer, and was known for being a true purist architect among Modern architects of the 20th century.
A large number of structures designed by van der Rohe can be seen in Chicago – his adopted hometown in America. These stunning pieces of architecture all share clean detailing, a free-flowing use of space and a clarity of construction. The Pavilion side table allows us mere mortals to bring the Modern design genius of van der Rohe into our homes. Truly an investment piece, this table will be as beautiful in eight decades time as it was eight decades ago.
