The Full Story

Our solid walnut Eames stools are made to the same specifications as the originals back in 1960. The stools were commissioned by Time Inc. to grace the Rockefeller Center’s lobby area. As well as these lovely stools the project included the stunning Lobby chairs.

So, it’s November 2011 and we have our first turned ‘Model A’ turned Eames stool. The woodturner contacted me last week and told me the first stool was ready to be picked up. Even though I had seen a smaller prototype a few months prior (albeit smaller in size) I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. To save on costs the prototype was made of softer wood. Believe me when I tell you walnut is a very, very expensive hardwood!

My expectations were surpassed on first sight of the stool. The piece really was something to behold. I sat there with the woodturner, the stool between us, chatting away about how exciting a project it had been for him and how excited I was to be able to add it to the Iconic range. Much of the time I just stared at the stool. There is so much to see, so many lovely grains, shapes and contours. It is a work of art!

Although originally designed to be a stool, I personally cannot bring myself to sit on it. I suspect most people owning this piece will use the item as an occasional table.

This particular stool design is known as the ‘Model A’ shape. At some point in the near future we’ll be offering ‘Model B’ and ‘Model C’. Watch this space for developments.
