The Marshmallow Sofa
If you like your modernism with a generous dose of whimsy, the playful, fanciful Marshmallow Sofa, designed by George Nelson and Irving Harper for the famed Herman Miller Furniture Company, could be the perfect addition to your living room. Just looking at the unusual design – comprised of 18 padded circles seemingly “floating” atop a steel frame – is bound to bring a smile to your face. Luckily, the sofa’s offbeat looks don’t mean your smile will fade the moment you finally decide to stop looking at it and actually sit on it. According to the 1956 Herman Miller catalogue, which introduced the Marshmallow Sofa, “Despite its astonishing appearance, this piece is very comfortable”. As if sitting on a bunch of marshmallows could be anything but easy on your bum.

Believe it or not, the basis for this design classic was actually a spectacular failure. An inventor initially approached Nelson and Harper with his plan for a “self-skinned” injection plastic disc. The inventor promised the discs would be both inexpensive to produce and highly durable, and the designers constructed their unusual sofa based on his concept. Unfortunately, the inventor’s high-resiliency, low-cost cushions proved impossible to construct. However, the design for the sofa itself was so revolutionary that Herman Miller was hooked, and chose to produce it using existing materials. The rest is design history.
In addition to being a statement-making furniture classic, the Marshmallow Sofa is incredibly resilient and easy to care for. Each cushion is detachable for easy cleaning, and they can even be rotated to equalise wear and tear. Leave it to George Nelson to combine space-age style with practical, modern convenience. This ingenious design makes this dramatic and elegant sofa a very workable solution for families and commercial use. So don’t just show off your Marshmallow – sit down and enjoy it.
