The Full Story

Reinterpreting the form using modern materials of polished steel and hand-tufted leather, Mies created a clean-yet-opulent, now classic style that didn’t sacrifice the chair’s inherent meaning – to represent high status. The Barcelona Sofa expands this luxurious, handmade creation to provide properly elegant seating for up to three VIP’s of your own choosing, in your own home.

Mies’ skyscraper comment didn’t just come out of thin air – the Modernist legend is as famous for his towering, steel and glass structures as he is for his furniture designs. He was one of the pre-eminent designers of the Bauhaus, which is why he was enlisted to build and furnish Germany’s entry into the International Exhibition, from the groundbreaking glass, steel and stone Pavilion down to the furniture inside it. Knowing the King and Queen of Spain would likely sit in seats of his creation, he made sure the Pavilion’s chairs were worthy of royalty.

Immediately recognised as something extraordinarily new and different, Mies’ chairs gained instant acclaim, and by 1931, were already in production for a German catalogue. The original stools were also part of the line, joined by the Barcelona Sofa and Day Bed based on the same design principals. Thanks to the enduring power of good design, you can now enjoy the royal comfort of the Barcelona Sofa every day. And you don’t even have to be a king to do it.
