Celebrated 20th Century architect and designer Le Corbusier was all about thinking big. He once proposed replacing a large part of the center of Paris with 18 sixty-story towers – an exercise in supersizing that fortunately did not come to pass. But when Le Corbusier “went large” in the furniture arena, the results were amazing, as evidenced by the enduring style and popularity of his Le Grand Confort 3-seater sofa.

The Grand Confort 3-seater is the largest piece in Le Corbusier’s LC2 and LC3 collections, designed in 1929 for the Salon d’Automne art exhibition in Paris. Both lines were envisioned as “cushion baskets”, with gleaming, tubular steel frames visible on the outside fitted with decadently comfortable leather-covered cushions. With ample room for three adults to sit in – dare we say it? – grand comfort, Le Grand Confort 3-seater delivers what it promises and more.
Arguably the most influential figure in the development of modern architecture, Le Corbusier was full of big ideas – some good, some a little on the wacky side (like razing the center of Paris). Those ideas also included strong opinions on how furniture should be designed. He viewed pieces of furniture as “servants” to human limbs, and called his Salon D’Automne installation where his Grand and Petit Confort lines premiered “Equipment for the Home”.
As chilly as that might sound, these “inside-out” sofas and chairs are hardly the cold, clinical objects the moniker implies. Instead, the seats truly do serve the sitter by surrounding him in cushioned comfort, while serving fans of good design with sleek lines that look as fresh and modern today as they did 80 years ago. Le Grand Confort 3-Seaters are found in elegant homes and offices all over the world, providing both a striking focal point and a wonderful place to sit. While they may not have had the instant impact of rebuilding a major city, their place as modernist masterpieces is undeniable.
At Iconic Interiors we are committed to bringing you the cream of modern furniture design. The design of every item we supply has stood the test of time, looking as fresh and contemporary today as the day it was first conceived.
