Le Grand Confort 2-Seater Sofa
The famed 20th Century architect and designer Le Corbusier once proclaimed that “a house is a machine for living in”. Not surprisingly, he viewed the furniture used inside of that “machine” in equally clinical terms, referring to chairs, tables and sofas as “equipment for the home”. Yet there is nothing mechanical or clinical about Le Corbusier’s most famous pieces of furniture, the LC2 and LC3 lines.

Better known by the monikers Le Petit and Le Grand Confort, these sleekly elegant designs are all about wrapping the body in supreme comfort, thanks to their plump, leather-wrapped cushions and sturdy support provided by their visible, tubular steel frames. The oversized Le Grand Confort 2-Seater Sofa is a prime example of the many virtues of Le Corbusier’s genius – an elegant, modern piece of art that is also an inviting place to sit.
The LC2 and LC3 lines were conceived as “cushion baskets” designed to bring the lowly-but-essential furniture frame into the spotlight, making it an integral part of the design. It was Le Corbusier’s way of bringing the spare, industrial look of the International Style – the modernist movement he pioneered – into the living room, without sacrificing comfort. His Grand and Petit Confort designs were the toast of 1929’s Salon D’Automne, a Paris show where Europe’s top designers and artists displayed their work.
Eight decades later, Le Corbusier’s “inside out” furniture line is still a sensation. The chairs and sofas remain among of the best-loved designs of the 20th Century, amazingly as fresh and relevant today as they were in the days before television and computers.
