Like all classic furniture pieces, the EA 108 Aluminium Chair fuses design and function, creating an object of beauty that is both artistically satisfying and highly practical. Part of the Aluminium Group of chairs, the EA 108 was designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1958 and is a key member of this classic chair collection – a collection that is rated by many as one of the greatest design achievements of the 20th century.
A world-famous husband-and-wife design team, the Eames were renowned for their innovation and vision, creating brand-new manufacturing methods and working with unusual materials to create ingenious furniture that solved many practical and aesthetic problems. Their use of aluminium in furniture design, for example, was extremely innovative – essentially taking a building material and using it to make lightweight, elegant chairs that resisted rust and sparkled like silver.
When the Aluminium Group of chairs were created in the 1950s, they utilised a brand-new production process that held the chairs’ upholstery in tension between the highly-polished aluminium frame. This process, created by the Eames themselves, meant the upholstery and chair fused together to become one streamlined object that was tough and elegant with beautifully smooth lines. Thus, the EA 108’s leather seat isn’t a separate cover but an integral part of the chair with unparalleled body contouring capabilities.
Today, designers still marvel at the EA 108 Aluminium Chair’s open construction and sumptuous lines, and luckily those of us who admire can inspire by purchasing an EA 108 of our very own.
