If, as Mies van der Rohe once said, “God is in the details”, then some divine force was truly at hand during the creation of the Barcelona Day Bed. Because, while the piece has the clean lines and structural simplicity we all expect from Modernist furniture, the tiniest details of the piece are what give the Day Bed its true beauty.

As with the rest of van der Rohe’s Barcelona Collection, each square of the leather upholstery is carefully welted together by hand. The frame is hand buffed. This meticulous attention to detail, combined with the finest craftsmanship, elevate what is already an elegant, versatile design to a timeless collectible piece you’ll be proud to show off in your home or office.
The Barcelona Day Bed was originally designed by Mies in 1930 as an addition to his hugely successful Barcelona Collection, which was first introduced in his German Pavilion at the 1929 International Exhibition in Barcelona. The Barcelona Chair was originally created to serve as a “throne” for the king of Spain during the inaugural ceremony of the Pavilion. The opulent upholstery was no doubt designed to provide the softest possible seat for the Royal Backside, while the design for the chair itself was a modern interpretation of the folding chairs used by Roman and Egyptian rulers.
While radical at the time, the fusion of ancient forms and starkly modern materials made the Barcelona Collection Mies’ most successful foray into furniture design. The entire Collection was recognised by the Museum of Modern Art in 1977, almost half a century after it was first introduced to the world. Today, more than 30 years after that, the Barcelona Day Bed remains a beautiful and luxurious way to add modernist style to any interior.
At Iconic Interiors we are committed to bringing you the cream of modern furniture design. The design of every item we supply has stood the test of time, looking as fresh and contemporary today as the day it was first conceived.
