The year was 1995. The magazine was British Vogue. On the cover, a naked Kate Moss draped her luscious form across a modern plastic chair that was as sinuous and sleek as the model herself.

Flash back to 1970. This time, the magazine was Nova, and the piece was a tongue-in-cheek photo essay titled “How to undress in front of your husband”. Different model. Different decade. But the futuristic plastic chair featured in the piece was the very same seat Miss Moss would pose upon a quarter-century later.

What sort of chair continues to represent the ultimate in cool modern style decade after decade? None other than the famous Panton Chair.

The Full Story

When he began developing it in 1967, Verner Panton called his amazing new synthetic stacking chair the Luron S. But by the dawn of the ‘70s, the chair that was rocking the design world was known simply as the Panton Chair. The first cantilevered chair to be moulded from a single piece of plastic, the resulting design was as artistically pleasing as a piece of modern sculpture, yet durable and easy to clean. It could very well be the ultimate chair for cafes, restaurants, family dining rooms and even outdoor use, but is comfortable enough to lounge in. Its futuristic-yet-timeless lines made it the “it” chair of the ‘70s, and transformed Panton into a bona-fide design world rock star.

Today, Panton’s sexy seat can be found around the world in the homes of collectors, artists and the rich and famous — perhaps including some real life rock stars. Yet thanks to its simple design and materials, this is one modernist design icon that’s accessible to just about everyone. So whether you’re after a whole set or want to make like Kate Moss and go solo on a single, you simply can’t go wrong with a Panton chair. After four decades, it’s still rather futuristic – and unmistakably cool.
