20th century modernist design produced more famous chairs than you can count – chairs that are sleek, chairs that are comfortable, chairs that have stood the test of time to become design icons. But of all the chairs created over the past century, none makes quite as much of a statement as Eero Aarnio’s Ball Chair.

The oh-so-modern, futuristic Ball Chair, also known as the Globe Chair, is unlike any seat ever created before. For starters, it’s completely round, save the single pedestal leg it stands and rotates on and the area cut out to accommodate the person sitting in it. When that person sits down, he or she is completely surrounded by the chair, which acts as a sort of “room within a room”, isolating them from the noises and distractions of the outside world. Aarnio even placed a telephone inside his original ball chair, should the sitter care to make a call.
Aarnio’s inspiration for his amazing chair was simple enough. The Finnish designer had a new house, but no “proper big chair” to put in it. So like any good furniture maker, he set out to create his perfect chair himself. Once he decided on the round ball shape, he built his masterpiece by hand, constructing an inside mould out of plywood, forming the ball shape by covering it with wet paper and laminating the surface with fiberglass. He then removed the mould, upholstered the chair and added a pedestal leg – and the red telephone on the inside wall. The result was one of the most remarkable chairs of the 20th century.
The original Ball Chair still stands in Eero Aarnio’s house. But thankfully, it was discovered by two representatives of the Asko furniture company, who opted to produce and sell the piece on a limited scale. Now you can have your own Ball Chair in your house – and turn your place into the grooviest pad on the block.
