If you buy one piece of designer furniture, make it the award-winning PK22 chair. Part of the internationally renowned ‘Kjaerholm Collection’, the PK22 was one of multi-award winning designer, Poul Kjaerholm’s, very first commercial creations. In fact, it was based on the PK25 Element Chair, which Kjaerholm created as part of his graduation project at the School of Applied Art in Copenhagen.
After proving his ‘metal’ with the PK25’s innovative steel frame, Kjaerholm went on to create the PK22 Easy Chair – an upmarket version of the PK25 finished in glorious leather and boasting quirky designer curves. The PK22 Easy Chair was awarded the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale, the world’s premium design fair, in 1957 – just one year after its celebrated designer graduated from design school.
As one of Kjaerholm’s earliest designs, the PK22 truly shows his natural talent and affinity with the ideals and materials of the 20th century modernist movement. The PK22 took the student to master status, with design improvements on the PK25 that afforded more economical production and added the innovative use of leather to its highly polished frame. As a result, the revolutionary PK22 Easy Chair was an immediate commercial success during its 1956 debut and has been purchased for stylish homes around the world ever since.
Not surprisingly, Kjaerholm became an instant designer name after the release of the PK22 and his pedigree continued to grow during his lifetime and beyond. His many designs live in stylish venues around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the V&A in London. However, it was his first experimentations with cantilever construction, as we see on the PK22, that really showed the world the innovation and vision Kjaerholm was capable of.
Designers all over the world continue to be inspired by the simplicity and floating elegance of the PK22 Easy Chair. One look at this relaxed work of art sparks the creative imagination and artistic flow – no wonder the young Kjaerholm was so much in demand after creating this functional piece of PK perfection.
