Why plop your bum in an ordinary chair when you can sit down in a “cushion basket?” That’s exactly how the Le Corbusier Group referred to their LC2 and LC3 furniture lines, which included the iconic Le Petit Confort Armchair.

The Full Story

Created in 1929 for the Salon d’Automne art exhibition in Paris, the LC2 Chair (as le Petit Confort Armchair is also known) was part of the first modern furniture line to take the radical step of making the furniture frame a dramatic and visible aspect of the design. These “inside-out” chairs, comprised of a simple tubular steel frame fitted with plump, leather-covered cushions, created a design sensation that has lasted for almost eight decades – and is still going strong today.

Le Petit Confort Chair and the entire Petit Confort line are scaled down versions of their “Grand” brothers. All were designed as a modernist response to the traditional club chair by the Le Corbusier group, which on this project included Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand. Their goal was to provide the well-padded comfort of the club chair without violating the industrial and minimalist principals that were the backbone of what was called the International Style. The resulting LC2 and LC3 lines were so wildly successful, they remain among the most recognisable and beloved pieces of 20th century furniture.

The man behind the “inside out” chair was called Charles-Edouard Jeanneret Gris at birth, but adopted the single name Le Corbusier to demonstrate his belief that anyone could reinvent oneself – a practice that was common among the artistic set in 20th Century Paris. When not designing groundbreaking pieces of furniture, he was an architect and urban theorist who spent more than 40 years envisioning a utopian “good society.” Experts disagree on many of his theories, but nearly everyone concurs that when it came to providing a great place to sit, Le Corbusier’s Petit Confort chair is a classic.
