The Full Story

A minimalist triumph, the Florence Knoll Arm chair was created in 1956 by renowned designer, Florence Knoll, and offers beauty, comfort and practicality in one stylish package. Knoll, a world-class architect and designer, revolutionised furniture design by creating pieces that solved practical problems as well as aesthetic ones, and the Knoll chair is a key example of this philosophy.

Before designing the Florence Knoll chair, Knoll asked: how can a piece of furniture support luxurious upholstery, yet take up as little space as possible? The solution: to create an extremely tough stainless-steel frame, beautifully designed, that used as few materials as possible and remained light and minimal. To this she added thick, cubic cushioning that slotted easily into awkward spaces and ensured even nooks and crannies could be stylish.

A pioneer of open-plan living, Knoll created clean, uncluttered furniture to suit minimalist spaces and helped create a whole new way of living and working. From the 1960s onwards, corporations quickly took on her vision of uncluttered work spaces and transformed the working environment. Knoll’s principles are still used today, and for her exceptional design and architectural work she won the 2002 National Medal of Arts, bestowed by the National Endowment for the Arts.

For over half a century, the Florence Knoll Arm chair has brought style to a variety of spaces: offices, homes and leisure facilities – but it’s no common piece of furniture. A true original, the Florence Knoll chair has graced the spaces of style icons throughout history.
