The Full Story

When award-winning furniture designer, Robin Day, created a living-room suite for the modern home, he believes that in the ‘small rooms’ of the 1960s, people needed to see over and under their furniture. Thus, he redesigned the classic ‘Chesterfield’, making it minimal, practically shaped and surrounded by light space.

The Robin Day Club armchair epitomises Day’s ideal of an object that creates space with its lines and open steel frame. Something of a contrast from his stark, economically produced chair and table designs in hard wood and polypropylene, the Club collection has deep cushioning and sumptuous fabric that offers the ultimate lounging experience.

Based on the classic ‘Chesterfield’ sofa, the Club armchair takes classic, establishment glamour and turns it completely on its head, paring down the oversized designs of the past and injecting a totally modern feel to the furniture scene. Instead of the heavy, cumbersome furniture of war-time Britain, Day created a sofa that was all at once comfortable, well-made, light and manoeuvrable.

Created during a decade of fresh, exciting ideas and ideological optimism, the Club range of furniture brought a whole new style to the homes of fashionable people, and continues to inspire many designer homes to this day. The Club Armchair’s unique cubic look brought brand new shapes to 1960s furniture design and has inspired designers for decades. Now, almost 50 years later, a new ‘eco’ model is also available, in addition to the classic Club. The ‘eco’ model’s environmentally friendly design boasts recycled fabric and an even more minimal metal frame.
