Beauty, simplicity and function: these are the qualities celebrated designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe brought to all his creations, and his modernist masterpiece, the Brno chair, is no exception. Designed in 1929, the Brno is now a timeless classic and much imitated, but arguably never bettered. This minimalist work of art continues to inspire countless furniture designs and remains a key style investment.
Originally designed as bedroom furniture for Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s architectural triumph, Tugendhat House, the Brno chair boasts the typical Mies clean lines and metal frame, but is crafted from finest Italian leather and solid stainless steel to create an incredibly strong, yet luxurious piece of furniture. Inspired by earlier Ludwig Mies van der Rohe cantilever chairs, such as the wicker MR20, the Brno chair remains a highly collectable piece for modernist enthusiasts and style devotees alike.
Having proved for almost 80 years that beautiful design never goes out of fashion, the Brno chair took its place in design history in 2005, when it was selected as a treasure of the man-made world by architectural historian, Dan Cruickshank. Hosting the BBC TV programme, Around the World in 80 Treasures, Cruickshank listed the Brno chair alongside great architectural treasures such as the Statue of Liberty and the Great Wall of China, proving a humble piece of furniture can compete with the most famous man-made structures in the world.
